Update: 29 March 2008 - Mr Tuckle Success
We went. We had perfect weather: snow, sunshine, blizzards, gails and had a fantastic day. Thanks to all who came. I've posted some photos at http://bananafrog.net/snowdonSnow060408.aspx which I will update later this week. We're going on Sunday 6th April
Update: 29 March 2008 - Mr Tuckle ItineraryBecause we have more daylight at this time of year we will be setting off from the United Reform Church car park at the later time of 8.45am on Sunday 6th April. I hope to set off up the mountain at 12pm and be back down for 6pm (a very comfortable pace), that should still leave us with about 2 hours of daylight if needed. If you haven't already please let me know if you intend to meet us at the church.
Update: 26 March 2008 - Mr Tuckle
The reccy yeserday went fine and there was plenty of deep crisp snow. The snow started just above the halfway cafe - which was open (the first time I've ever seen that) - and, though a bit of a trudge in places, was manageble all the way to the top. The conditions were: thick fog from Clogwyn onwards (so no view) and gusting winds (windchill -12) which provided for a nice ice crystal exfolliation treatment on exposed skin. In the lee on the summit I was able eat some lunch but didn't hang around too long as my hands did start to get numb. In hindesight I should have eaten at the halfway point which was just below the freezing level.
I've posted some pictures on bananafrog.
Unless the weather gets really warm and wet there should still be plenty of snow about on the 6th.
I have also been invited to make use of the facilities at Penceunant Isaf which is near the top of the steep road at the beginning of the walk. Here we have been given permission to park up to 3 cars and make use of any first aid/emergency equipment they have, you can eat your own food here and they will provide cups of tea. They also have a shower and towels and is open from 9am till 9pm. Update: 23 March 2008 - Mr Tuckle We're going on Sunday 6th AprilI'm going up there on Tuesday 25th March to do a reccy and see how much snow is up there and if it's likely to last.Update: 23 March 2008 - Mr TuckleWell it seems like today (Easter Sunday) would have been a good day to go but not enough notice and there are also a lot of people on holiday. I've decided to for next Sunday (30 March) if Richard and Ali are available and if not the Sunday after (6th April) and hope there is still some snow around. Please try to let me know if you plan on coming.Update: 11 March 2008 - Mr TuckleSunday didn't happen due to predicted storms. We'll sit it out and wait for the next snowfall. If you look at past photos on www.bananafrog.net you will be reasured that the best year for snow was 2006 when I went in May so there's plenty of time yet (fingers crossed).10th March:Jeff Button says "Bugger Have I missed it? I seem to have lost touch.Sunday is also the only day in March that Richard S. can go.4th March, The Doctor writes: Count me in for Sunday. Update: 4 March 2008 - Mr Tuckle This looks about as good as it's going to get. Hope it lasts until weekend. If so We'll go on Sunday.Update: 19 Feb 2008 - Mr Tuckle It's going to be March and still no snow is forecast. Take a look at the conditions on this capture from the web camUpdate: 1 Feb 2008 - Mr TuckleThere's snow on Snowdon and more to come. Web Cam Sadly It looks like we're not going to be able to get there until the weekend 16/17th Feb so I hope it sticks around.Update: 29 Jan 2008 - Mr TuckleDr. Ali, Richard and Mr Tuckle walked the Carneddau Horseshoe (Snowdonia) on Sunday 27th. No sign of any snow whatsoever on any of the summits. The BBC are predicting some snowfall this weekend. See you at Imbolc. An interesting story:Seems like people are keen to do this sooner rather than later so at the moment I am hoping to to do it before the end of February though it will not be the weekend of February 2nd / 3rd or February 9th / 10th.
I have set this page up to organise the Snowdon in the Snow walk for 2008. To add to or edit this page just click the 'EasyEdit' button at the top and type in your text. You don't even have to register. It would make it easier to track if you add your name to your edits though.
It's getting near the time of year again for the annual trek up Snowdon in the Snow, which usually takes place after the first heavy snowfall of the new year, I have put some reports on the web site which - as the people who went last year will already know - indicate that there may not be too many more occasions where there is any snow. I have uploaded the photos from the previous years - including last year - on to the web site. If you have any that you wouldn't mind sharing please get them to me so I can upload them too or upload them your self on the Upload your photographs page. I would particularly like one of the whole group last year taken before we set off. Please don't email print quality photos to me though as I have not yet managed to equip myself with broadband (not bad for a web developer eh?)Thanks to you all the last trip was a fantastic success. This year I have set up a wiki to try to help communication during the organisation. The plan is to replace the inevitable email ping pong where I am the only person with access all your emails with a central source of information which any of you can access, edit and contribute to. Please feel free to email me also as the wiki is a bit experimental but it may be a good place to arrange lifts etc. Anyone can edit the wiki web page in any way they see fit and no web editing skills are required just click the 'Easy Edit' button at the top. I would also appreciate any feedback from people who have been in the past.Things to discuss this year include: - If I can get things organised early enough and there are enough people going it may be worth hiring a coach
- Some people have suggested setting a date but others preferred the ad-hoc nature of it last year
- If we don't get the snow and the conditions are suitable should we consider a different route
As ever please feel free to invite anyone else you think will enjoy the occasion. All that is required is a reasonable level of fitness and some bits of kit which I will list below.Though they don't know it yet I will be relying again on the expert help of Mr Statham and Dr Ali to look after everyone and carry emergency equipment on the day. If there is any help anybody else can contribute I would be grateful. We will be taking the Llanberis Path Route to the summit and back. This is a 10 mile round trip and under good conditions would normally take about 6 hours but could take longer. There are a couple of spots on the Llanberis Path Route which can become impassable in bad weather conditions so you must be prepared to turn around if the conditions are judged to be too bad to continue or if it's getting too late.
Please let me know if you are coming or inviting someone along so that I can keep you informed of the plans.
